Deon Nielsen Price and Berkeley Price

Deon Nielsen Price, prize-winning composer and pianist, recording artist, author and educator, serves on the Executive Boards of the National Association of Composers, USA (NACUSA) and the International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM). A recipient of grants and commissions including the Barlow Foundation, Mu Phi Epsilon, Alaska Arts Council, Midwest Arts Council and Meet the Composer, her compositions are published by Culver Crest and Southern Music, and are recorded on Cambria Master Recordings distributed by NAXOS: SunRays (critiqued as “first rate” by American Record Guide); SunRays II: City Views; Clariphonia; and the 2009 orchestral release, Dancing on the Brink of the World. Dr. Price earned degrees with honors at Brigham Young University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Southern California; and is author of the text, Accompanying Skills for Pianists, now in its 2nd edition, (Culver Crest Publications).

Berkeley Price, known for his virtuosity and artistry on all members of the clarinet family, is a chamber musician, conductor, and recording artist. He earned both the Master and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees and was awarded the Clarinet Teaching Fellowship at the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Peter Hadcock, Eli Eban, and Kenneth Grant. Price’s earlier studies were at Brigham Young University with Dr. David Randall, at the Colburn School with Yehuda Gilad, and at the Crossroads School of the Arts in Santa Monica where he performed with Heiichiro Ohyama and Yo-Yo Ma. Active as a free-lance performer, his annual solo and ensemble tours have taken him to Europe, China, Ukraine, Japan, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and throughout the USA. Dr. Price is currently Professor of Music Theory/Band Director at Antelope Valley College (CA) and was previously Director of Instrumental Music at the Windward School and Assistant Professor of Woodwinds/Music Education at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He is also former music director/conductor of the Palos Verdes Regional Orchestra.

Since 1994, Berkeley and Deon have been performing regularly as the Price Duo, a mother/son chamber music ensemble whose mission is to bring high quality music on clarinet and piano to the public through performance, recording, and artist residencies. Their programs include Deon’s original compositions, well-known classics, and exciting contemporary music that often features music by women composers.

The Price Duo has performed at International Congresses on Women in Music and Annual Chamber Music Concerts sponsored by the International Alliance for Women in Music at CalArts in Valencia; St Marks in London; National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C.; California State University Fullerton; Florida International University in Miami; China Conservatory in Beijing; and in international festivals at the Nemean Cultural Games in Greece, National Theater in Panama City, World Music Forum in Los Angeles, in Vienna, in Heidelberg, and in Kiev with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.

During the 1999-2001 seasons the Price Duo played forty concerts in seven states in the U. S. and England. In June 2001, the Price Duo performed concerts in China at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Beijing Normal University and China People’s University and the Beijing Concert Hall. In 2003 in Ohio they performed at the Mu Phi Epsilon International Centennial Celebration and 12 other concerts celebrating the 95th birthday of composer, Zenobia Powell Perry. in 2005 and 2006, they were invited to perform at the World Music Forum held in Los Angeles and on the internationally televised Chinese New Year Celebration at Kodak Theater in Hollywood; in 2007 on the recording with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and in 2008 presented a concert for the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the National Association of Composers/USA. In 2010 they were on the Faces of Eve concert in the Women’s Work Festival in New York City and presented a recital on the Steinway Concerts in the Canyon Series in Beverly Hills, California.
