Synopsis

Ammon and the King: Immigrant Speaks Truth to Power, Chamber Opera by Deon Nielsen Price with text adapted by the composer from a story in the Book of Mormon

Prologue: Wicked Villager Zeezri tells about his war-mongering people and about a more peaceful agrarian nation nearby that has sent an emissary of peace, Ammon, to his country. Zeezri vows he will kill the immigrant.

Act I: King Lamoni lets Ammon stay as a servant and he becomes a hero when he saves the King's flocks from the wicked villagers. The King believes Ammon's message that he has been sent by the Great Spirit (God) to teach peace and love to the people. The King is overcome with a sense of guilt for his own murders and sinks down.

Act II begins with the Queen reveling in her riches, when she is informed of the King's apparent death. All mourn. The Queen begins to find her inner strength, believes he is sleeping, and calls for Ammon, who announces that the King is not dead but will rise on the morrow. When he does rise, the changed King describes his epiphany and, while declaring that their hearts are full, he, the Queen, Ammon and the servants all sink in ecstasy. All except head servant Abish, who runs to tell the villagers what has happened, thinking their hearts will be changed also. But, when they come they are alarmed, thinking all are dead, and blame Ammon, the monster immigrant. In the Sextet, one by one the characters rise, all singing their own views. Except for the antagonist Zeezri, all sing in a joyful finale: “We are changed, our hearts are new!”

Libretto - Prologue

We are a strong and ferocious people in a bloodthirsty land
Long ago and far away.
We delight in plunder and murder to get gold
We scheme, deceive, Scatter the flocks even of our king!
According to our pleasure!

In a far away land our enemies till the ground—
They labor with their hands. Nay! Not for us!
Our Fathers taught us to take the land and harvest from our enemies.
Our Fathers said in the beginning our enemies stole the rights of our Fathers!
Our Fathers taught us to hate those aliens; Fight in bloody battle!

Sons of the enemy king enter our far away land—
Their king blessed them to be preserved by the strength of a Holy God.
They say our war is based on an ancient lie!
They bring a message of peace and hope, reconciliation.
They say we are all brothers!

Message of hope— Hyah!
I, I will not believe their words Never!
Ah hah! We have caught one of them!
It is Ammon.
We will see what is the King's pleasure with Ammon!

Libretto - Act I

Here is Ammon! He is a stranger! He is an enemy!
He is from outside! He is not one of us!
Do with him what you will, O King.

He came into our land Will you put him in prison? Will you cast him out of our land?
Will you slay him? Yea, do with him what you will, O King.
Slay him! Let him stay!
He must go! He is a stranger. Strangers torment us!
Let him stay.
Do you desire to dwell in this land, among these pillagers, my people?
Yea, I desire to dwell among this people
Perhaps until the day I die
He will die!

Loose his hands!
Nay, he is an alien!
You may stay, perhaps until the day you die.
You may take one of my daughters to wife.
Nay. Nay.
One of your daughters to wife?
Oh nay, King Lamoni, but I will be thy servant.

Go therefore, prepare my chariots, prepare my horses. I will go to the feast.
I will prepare your chariots. I will prepare your horses.
Nay, Go therefore with my other servants.
Go therefore to keep watch.
Now with my other servants. Keep watch over my flocks.

Hah! I will scatter the flocks of the King!
Hah! Sheep will flee many ways.
Hah! Flocks will flee to my pastures, my pastures.
Yea! I will keep watch over your flocks. The King will slay his servants—and Ammon!

According to our pleasure
We are delighted; we scatter the King's flocks
We drive the flock, the lambs into our own pastures.
According to our pleasure
We are delighted, we have no fear of Ammon
Anyone of us can slay Ammon
According to our pleasure.

Oh the faith of my father will preserve me in this far away land.
Oh the faith of my father gives me great power in this land.
Faith of my father sent me to this land.
I will bring words of peace by the faith of my father.

We fear! We fear!
Wicked men scatter our flocks.
The King, the King slays us
When wicked men scatter our flocks.
We fear, we fear the King!

I will show forth the power within me
I will restore the flocks unto the King.
I may win the hearts of these, my fellow servants.
I may lead them to believe my words of peace—
I may lead them to believe my words of righteousness.
I may lead them to believe my message to this people.

Hyah! Behold, already wicked men scatter our flocks.
Woe, woe!

My brethren, be of good cheer! Let us go to search the flocks.
We will gather them together,
Swiftly we will bring them back to the place of water.
Behold, we have gathered all our flocks.
The King will not slay us.

Hyah! The King will slay us!
Wicked men scatter our flocks.
Hyah! Behold, again wicked men scatter our flocks.

Encircle the flocks that they flee not.
I go with sling and stone and sword!

(no text)

Ammon, Ammon, And they were not a few.
Ammon cast stones with his sling! Yea, with mighty power.
He did sling stones among them.
They were astonished at his power. They could not hit him with their stones.
They came with clubs to slay him, And they were not a few
Every man who lifted his club to slay Ammon,
He smote off their arms with his sword.
Ammon stood forth and caused them to flee by the strength of his arm!

We watered our flocks,
We returned them to your pasture, O King!
Here we bear the arms that Ammon smote off with his sword.
These are testimony of what we have done.

Surely this Ammon is more than a man!
Is he more than a man?
Is this not the Great Spirit?
Is this not the Great Spirit who doth send
His great punishments on these, my people?
For their many murders; for my many murders,
Yea, for our murders!
Surely this Ammon is more than a man!
Is he not the great, Great Spirit?

Whether he be the Great Spirit, or a man, we know not, O King.
This we do know:
Ammon is a friend to the King.
We do know
Ammon cannot be slain by the enemies of the King
Ammon is strong. Ammon is an expert.
Wicked men cannot scatter the flocks when Ammon is with us.
No man has such great powers as Ammon.

I know, now I know that he's the Great Spirit!
He has come down to preserve your lives
That I might not slay you like your brethren
When wicked men scattered my flocks.

Now this is the Great Spirit of whom our Fathers have spoken.
Oh, woe is me!
I have slain many of my servants whose flocks were scattered at water.
Woe is me!

I do not see him. Where is this man who has such great power?

Where is Ammon?
Feeding the horse, preparing the chariots
You commanded us: feed the horses, prepare the chariots.
We travel tomorrow to the feast
To the land of thy father for the great feast.

Ammon is feeding the horses?
Yea, Ammon is feeding the horses.
Ammon said he will be thy servant.
Surely none of my servants are faithful as this Ammon.
He doth remember all my commandments.
Ammon doth carry them out.
Surely he is the Great Spirit.

I desire to speak with Ammon.
Oh, Nay! Nay, for I do fear him!
Oh, woe is me!
I have slain many of my servants
whose flocks were scattered at water!
Woe is me!

The horses and chariots are prepared.
Now I go to report to the King, MY King.
He did not slay me.
He did not cast me into prison
I am a stranger in this land
The King let me stay—perhaps until the day I die.

I have shown forth the power within me.
I have restored the flocks unto the King.
I have won the hearts of my fellow servants.
I may lead them to believe my words of peace.
I may lead them to believe my words of righteousness.
I may lead them to believe my message to this people.

I go to report to my King.

Our murders, Woe!
My many murders, Oh, woe!

The King is distraught. I will leave.
Nay, nay, my Brother in God. Nay, do not go.
Rabbanah, the King desireth thee to stay.
How do you know of God?
From the vision of my father many years ago.
I have told no one.
Oh the faith of my father has sent you (me) to this faraway land.
Oh the faith of our father has given you (me) great power in this land.
You (I) will bring words of hope by the faith of our fathers.

Let us go now to the King.

O King, what wilt thou that I should do for Thee?
O King, what wilt thou that I should do for Thee?
O King, what wilt thou that he should do for Thee?
Ammon, Ammon
Is it because thou heard I defended thy servants and thy flocks?
I did cast stones with my sling, yea, with mighty power!
I smote off their arms with my sword!
Yea, I stood forth and caused them to flee
By the strength of my arm.
He knoweth my thoughts!
O King, is it this that causeth thy marvelings?
Who are you?
Are you, the Great Spirit?
The Great Spirit who knoweth all things?
I am not!
How knoweth thou the thoughts of my heart?
Tell me! Speak boldly!
Tell me by what power ye slew my wicked brethren that scattered my flocks.
And smote off the arms! Tell me of these things!
And whatever thou desireth of me I will grant it unto thee.
Wilt thou hearken to my words if I tell you by what power I do these things?
This is what I desireth of thee.
Yea, I will believe all thy words.
I will bring words of peace by the faith of my father.
Believest thou that there is a God?
I do not know what that meaneth.
Believest thou that there is a Great Spirit?
Yea, I believe that there is a Great Spirit. This is God.
Do you believe that this Great Spirit, who is God,
created all things in heaven and earth?
Yea, I believe he created all things in earth. I do not know the heavens.
The Heavens is a place where God dwells with all his holy angels.
Is it above the earth?
Yea, and He looketh down upon all the children of men;
He knows the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
By His hand were they all created from the beginning.
Believest thou these words?
Yea, I believe all the words which thou hast spoken;
Art thou sent from God?
I am a man. Man was created in the image of God.
I am called to teach this people.
A portion of that spirit dwelleth in me giving me knowledge and power by the faith of my father, and my desires that are in God.

Creation of the world.
Adam!
Fall of Man
Writings, Holy Scriptures.
Holy Prophets!
Father Lehi. Journeys, wilderness, sufferings, hunger, rebellion!
Plan of redemption from the foundation of the world.
Christ will come!

Ammon, I believe all your words.
Have mercy, O Lord!
For our many murders.
O Lord, have mercy on me and my people.
Oh…Oh light lights up my soul!
My soul! Oh joy!
I see a glorious light,
Oh my soul, what joy!
(King sinks down in ecstatic swoon)

Plan of redemption from the foundation of the world.
Christ will come. He will come!

Libretto - Act II

Ah! I am merry in my emeralds, in all my splendor!
Our fathers taught us to be merry in all our splendor!
Tomorrow we die.
O the King has murdered to bring me gold and silver.
The more I receive the merrier I am!
I dearly love the King!
I am merry in my splendor!

Woe!
My heart is loving thee. You are my loving husband.
My heart is loving thee—
Father of our children, leader of our people!
My heart is loving thee.
Woe! Two days and two nights the King has lain here.
Woe! The king has lain here as dead. Woe!

O Queen, the King is dead.
Nay, he sleepeth.
The King, we take to the sepulcher.
Nay, he sleepeth.
Nay, take him not to the sepulcher.
Nay, take him not, for he sleepeth.
He is the King and my loving husband.
See how now he sleeps.
Nay, take him not to the sepulcher.
Oh, see now how he sleeps.
Oh my Queen, do you know Ammon? He saved the King's flocks
I know Ammon is a great man.
I desire he should come unto me.

Ammon, Ammon
And they were not a few.
Every man who lifted his club to smite Ammon,
He smote off their arms with his sword.
Ammon stood forth and caused them to flee by the strength of his arm!

O my Queen, here is Ammon.
O my Queen, What wilt thou that I should do for thee?
The servants of my husband have made known to me that thou art a prophet of a holy God.
Thou hast power to do mighty works in his name.
If this is true, I would that ye should go and see my husband.

Two days and two nights the King has lain here.
Some say he is not dead. Some say that he is dead.
They would bury him in the sepulcher.
As for myself, I, I believe he is not dead.
I believe he is not dead but that he sleepeth. Yea, he sleepeth.

Is he dead?
The King is not dead. His frame is overcome by light.
He sleepeth in God. Bury him not!

Take him, take him to the sepulcher!
Oh no, bury him not! For he sleepeth. Yea, he sleepeth.
On the morrow he shall rise.
The light of everlasting life lights up his soul.
His natural frame is overcome; he is carried away in God.
Oh, bury him not! On the morrow he shall rise!

Oh my Queen,
Do you believe that King Lamoni shall rise on the morrow?
He shall rise on the morrow.
Oh I, I have only thy word and the word of my servant.
Yea, I believe! It shall be as thou sayest!

Blessed art thou, Thou hast exceeding faith!
Oh woman, my Queen, I say unto you,
There has not been such great faith
Among all my own people in my faraway land.

The dark veil is cast away
Light lights up his mind.
Light, light of the glory of God.
Marvelous light of his goodness.
Light of everlasting life lights up his soul,
Marvelous light of his goodness
He is carried away in God.

(King arises)

Blessed be the name of God!
Blessed art thou, my Queen!
I have seen my Redeemer!
He shall come forth;
He shall be born of a woman.
He shall redeem all mankind who believe on his name

Oh, blessed is the King! He has seen his Redeemer who shall come forth and be born of a woman,
Who shall redeem all mankind who believe on his name.
My heart is full
(King swoons again in ecstasy)

Oh blessed is the King! My heart is full!
(Queen swoons in ecstasy)
My prayers are answered.
Faith of my Father sent me to this land.
I have brought words of hope by the faith of my father.
My heart is full!
(Ammon swoons in ecstacy)

He has brought words of hope by the faith of his father.
O Lord, have mercy on us, on our people
Have mercy, O Lord, have mercy for our many murders, mercy!
Oh, oh light! Light!
Our hearts are full!
(Servants swoon in ecstasy, but not Abish)

All glory to God! Glorious light!
The light of God is upon the King; Bright light lights up his mind.
The light of God is upon the Queen. White light lights up her soul.
The light of God is upon Ammon.
The light of God is upon the servants!
They are carried away in God!
All glory to God, glorious light! Great light of the glory of God!

I will tell all the people!
They will see the light of God!
I will run from house to house.
I will tell them what has happened.
They will see the light of God.
Then they will believe in God!
I will run from house to house.

The King is dead? The queen is dead? The servants are dead?
Great evil has come upon us.
Great evil has come upon the King and his house.
Look! Here is Ammon!
He is not of our land.
The King let Ammon remain in our land.
Ammon is a stranger!
Ammon has done this!
Ammon is a monster! monster!

We are delighted; we have no fear of Ammon!
Anyone of us can slay Ammon
According to our pleasure.
Ammon is a monster!

Z. They are all dead! Ammon is a monster. the King has done this with all his murders.
Those are all dead. Ammon is a monster! Ammon killed my brother with his sword!
I will not hearken to his words! We do not believe him. Ammon!

Ab. Nay! Nay! Oh woe is me! Oh, my Queen! My Queen!
Arise! My Queen, my King! Oh, light!
O God, have mercy on our people!
Blessed is my God! All glory to God! O light!

Q. O blessed is God! O blessed is my God!
O God, have mercy on this people! Have mercy on us! on this people!
Oh light! O blessed is God! O blessed is my God!
Light lights up our souls. Our hearts are full!

K. What is this contention?
I have seen a vision, I have seen my Redeemer!
Man in the beginning was created in the image of God.
Ammon with the Holy Spirit came to teach this truth to my people.
Ammon has power from that Great Spirit!
Ammon has faith and great desires which are in God!
I have seen a vision. I have seen my Redeemer!

Am. My prayers are answered. Many believe in my words.
Servants: Ammon! They came with clubs to slay him. Ammon stood forth and caused them to flee by the strength of his arm. And they were not a few.
Ammon hath power from God!

We are changed! Our hearts are new; Things of God angels have told us.
The Lord has poured out on us His Spirit.
They are changed; their hearts are new.
Things of God angels have told them; the Lord has poured out on them His Spirit.
All glory to God I am a stranger in this land.
I am accepted in this land. Many believe in my words.
My prayers are answered.
We are changed! Our hearts are new.
Things of God angels have told us.
The Lord has poured out on us His Spirit.
Our hearts are full.
